Health Risks if I don't get involved
Risk of a More Serious Medical Condition
Urinary incontinence (involuntary loss of urine) is often a symptom of some other health-related problem. It should not be dismissed as "just a natural part of aging". Finding out the cause of an overactive bladder control problem as soon as possible and getting early treatment could prevent negative effects on your family member's ability to function in the future.
Quality of Life, Depression and Isolation
A person with an overactive bladder control problem may feel a certain lack of control over their life. Other emotional effects of these conditions include feelings of insecurity, reduced self-esteem and anxiety. They may develop insomnia, depression and increased withdrawal from social situations - all due to a readily treatable medical condition.
Risk of Dehydration
If a family member is significantly reducing his or her fluid intake, it could lead to kidney or digestive problems, including constipation. If chronic (ongoing) constipation develops, more bladder control problems may occur due to the added strain on the lower abdomen.
