Overactive bladder medication

In cases of overactive bladder with symptoms of frequency, urgency and urge incontinence, drug therapy can often be effective in restoring bladder control in many sufferers.

Unlike stress incontinence which is caused by weakened pelvic muscles, urge incontinence is caused by an overactive detrusor muscle, sometimes referred to as overactive bladder. The most common drugs used to treat this condition are known as antimuscarinics and they work by helping to calm the detrusor muscle. They reduce the number of detrusor muscle contractions, allowing the bladder to fill up to a more normal capacity before the desire to urinate is felt.

More recent treatments are now available that have been shown in scientific trials to effectively treat overactive bladder without the side effects of older medications such as severe dry mouth, constipation and drowsiness.

If you are prescribed medication by your doctor it is essential that you finish the complete course otherwise the efficacy of the treatment is reduced and may result in a reoccurrence of the problem.
